Merkel Leads The Free World

The center of the free world has been somewhere between the US and UK for the last 200 years or so, but now it seems to have shifted to Europe.

The US and the UK used to lead in free trade and personal freedom, but with Brexit and Trump things have changed.

Donald Trump is abolishing all trade agreements using the reason that the entire world is taking advantage of poor, little USA. It´s beyond me how someone can think that the US, which is the only superpower nowadays, can be bullied around. In reality, it is the US which sets the conditions for these trade agreements.

Just a while ago, US President Trump said that the US has made some of the worst trade deals in history, go figure.

Brexit has also diminished the role of the UK as another center for the free world. It´s an isolationist move economically and socially. The rhetoric against Eastern Europeans has increased over the last year, in addition to a few attacks that have taken place against European nationals in Britain.

On the other hand, the EU is tightening its ranks, becoming more cooperative within itself and pushing for more open trade deals.

The EU had a meeting with Chinese officials. The EU would like to open markets with China leading to a full trade agreement. They also discussed civil society and will continue a dialogue on human rights.

You don´t hear such things from the Americans or the Brits anymore. So, the AngloSaxons are withdrawing and the EU is taking their place. We´ll see after a decade how this all works out in the end.
