The dollar appreciates in Colombia in line with a complicated day for LATAM

In today’s session, the US dollar is trading at an average of 3,970.20 Colombian pesos, representing a change of 0.1% compared to the previous session’s rate of 3,964.33 pesos.

In the last seven days, the US dollar has increased by 1.18%; however, over the past year, it still shows a decrease of 13.21%.

The Brazilian real also depreciates in today’s Monday session, the beginning of the week, and the Mexican market loses ground on Wall Street with an average decline of 0.5%

Regarding the changes observed in the most recent day compared to previous days, it reverses the previous day’s data when it experienced an increase of 0.95%, indicating a lack of stability in recent results. Over the past week, volatility is visibly lower compared to the data recorded over the past year (15.47%), indicating a more stable behavior in recent days.

The Banco de la República de Colombia expects the exchange rate to average 4,081 pesos per dollar by the end of 2024. This forecast is encouraging, far from the peaks reported by the national currency between the end of 2022 and the beginning of 2023.

Regarding inflation, forecasts are also positive. A downward trend is expected, with inflation projected to decrease to 5.61%, still far from the ideal three percentage points but avoiding the 10% level it reached in previous months.

However, these forecasts contrast with the GDP growth projections, as the central bank expects it to be 1.2% in 2024.

Like other currencies in the region, such as the Brazilian real or the Mexican peso, the Colombian peso has also been one of the most appreciated in emerging markets. Becoming one of the most appreciated currencies in Latin America, the peso had reached levels of $4,100 per dollar this year.
