S&P 500 Trails Nasdaq Higher As Risk Sentiment Improves
Skerdian Meta•Thursday, August 8, 2024•1 min read
The sentiment has turned positive in financial markets today, particularly in the US session, which is helping stock markets. The S&P 500 is trailing the Nasdaq, which is leading the way higher as Tech stocks are attracting some demand again, however, the picture is a bit more mixed.

Mixed Performance in the Stock Market
The main indices, including the S&P 500 and Nasdaq, are climbing today as risk sentiment improves following reduced US unemployment claims. However, with yesterday’s bearish reversal still fresh in mind, there are concerns that this bullish momentum might not hold. The stock market today reflects a varied performance across industries, with the pharmaceutical sector standing out, particularly Lilly (LLY), which surged by 14% and emerged as the top performer. While some industries posted modest gains, others struggled to keep up.
Here’s a snapshot of the main indices:
- Dow Industrial Average is up by 230 points, or 0.56%, trading at 39,093.
- S&P 500 Index is trading higher by around 100 points, or 1.05%, at 5,298.
- NASDAQ Index is up 230 points, or 1.80%, trading at 16,565.
- Russell 2000 Index is trading up 26 points, or 1.20%, at 2,072.
Tech Stocks Lead the Optimistic Outlook
Today’s market optimism was driven by the decline in US unemployment claims, which eased fears about a weakening labor market. However, cautious sentiment remains. The tech sector, especially semiconductors, showed strong gains, indicating that growth prospects in technology are likely to stay robust despite recent market turbulence.
