Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump announced his support for a Florida ballot initiative that would legalize recreational marijuana use for adults over 21.
Trump made this statement late Sunday on Truth Social, following remarks in late August suggesting he was open to the idea of legalizing recreational marijuana in the state.
Despite opposition from some Republicans, including Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, Trump backs the ballot measure known as Amendment 3.
Trump will face Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris in the November 5 election, with polls showing the race as a near tie.
“As I’ve said before, it’s time to end the unnecessary arrests and imprisonments of adults for small amounts of marijuana intended for personal use,” Trump wrote. “As a Floridian, I will vote YES on Amendment 3 this November.”
In his post, Trump also expressed support for legislative efforts to allow banks to serve cannabis businesses operating legally under state laws.
“As president, we will continue focusing on research to unlock the medical uses of marijuana, reclassifying it to a Schedule 3 drug, and working with Congress to pass common-sense laws, including safe banking for state-licensed businesses,” Trump added.
The leading candidates for the White House in the November 5 election, Republican Donald Trump and Democrat Kamala Harris, will face off on television this Tuesday in the first and, for now, only debate agreed upon by their respective campaigns. Both aim to sway a voter base that remains in a statistical tie.
The electoral campaign took a sharp turn in late June when Trump sat down for a one-on-one debate with President Joe Biden. That encounter marked the beginning of the end for Biden’s candidacy, as his hesitant performance reignited concerns about his age, compounded by a series of public gaffes afterward.
