Latest Update on Poly Network’s Hack: Hacker Holding on to Bounty?

Latest news coming in about the Poly Network hack shows that the issue is far from resolved, even though the attacker did start returning the stolen funds back to the company. According to latest reports, although the hacker did refund almost the entire loot, barring the $33 million in USDT which was frozen by Tether in the immediate aftermath of the attack, he is yet to provide Poly Network the key for the multisig wallet into which he has transferred the funds.

Shortly after detecting the attack, Poly Network had offered a bounty of $500,000 to the hacker if he cooperated with the company and returned the loot. The hacker had refused the bounty and started transferring back the stolen funds a day after the hack, leading Poly Network to call him a
‘white hat’ hacker who meant to only highlight the vulnerability and not inflict any damage.

Although, now it turns out that Mr. White Hat as he is being called by the company appears to be going back on his word. The hacker is planning to hold on to the bounty and offer it up to anyone else who can successfully hack the cross-chain DeFi platform.

According to his latest message posted on Ethereum’s blockchain during the previous session, “I WILL PROVIDE THE FINAL KEY WHEN _EVERYONE_ IS READY. MY IDEA IS NOT CHANGED, BUT I DO WORRY IT MIGHT BE AN ENDLESS WAR. SO I MIGHT RELEASE IT EARLIER AS LONG IF THE COMMUNITY UNDERSTANDS EVERYTHING.”
