River Falls, Wisconsin-based Jack and the Green Sprouts, Inc. is recalling its 5 ounce packages of Alfalfa and Alfalfa Onion sprouts citing the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
The impacted product comes in a 5 ounce, clear plastic package marked with lot #300 UPC 763247198915 or #246 UPC 763247195945 on the top. The produce was sold in MN, WI and Iowa at grocery store and local Co-ops.
The recall was initiated after the company’s routine testing revealed the presence of Listeria monocytogenes in 5 ounce packages of Alfalfa sprouts.
Listeria monocytogenes is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, while Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.
However, the company has not received any reports of illnesses related to the recalled products so far.
The company has susupended the production of the product while it continues to investigate the source of the issue.
Consumers who have purchased 5 ounce packages of Alfalfa and Alfalfa Onion sprouts are urged to discarded or return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.
In similar issues related to Listeria monocytogenes, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in August said six people have died and 14 others were hospitalized due to the latest multi-state outbreak of Listeria linked to meats sliced at Delis. It was the largest listeriosis outbreak since the 2011 outbreak linked to cantaloupe.
