Nasdaq 100 Faces Bearish Pressure as High-Memory-Bandwidth Semis Unwind

Quick overview

  • The Nasdaq 100 has declined over 4% month-to-date, currently trading near 28,604 after reaching an all-time high in June.
  • A bearish 'Double Top' reversal pattern has formed, with the index breaking below key moving averages, indicating a loss of near-term momentum.
  • The critical support level to watch is 28,200; a close below this could lead to further declines towards 27,844.
  • Investor sentiment is shifting from tech stocks to financials, driven by concerns over high valuations and a cooling economic backdrop.

The Nasdaq 100 (NDX) is currently navigating a highly volatile period after printing an all-time high near 30,773 in early June; the tech-heavy index has experienced a sharp “elevator down” effect. As of July 20, the index is trading near 28,604, representing a decline of over 4% month-to-date.

The daily chart has formed a clear 4-week bearish “Double Top” reversal pattern. The price recently broke decisively below both its 20-day and 50-day moving averages, signaling a breakdown in near-term momentum.

The immediate “line in the sand” is the neckline support at 28,200. A daily or weekly close below this level could trigger a negative feedback loop of long liquidations, exposing the next intermediate Fibonacci support level at 27,844.

To negate the current bearish technical bias, the index first needs to reclaim the short-term pivotal resistance at 28,945. Beyond that, heavier structural resistance sits at the 50-day moving average confluence near 29,600.

The primary catalyst for the July drawdown is a broad unwinding in high-memory-bandwidth semiconductor and AI infrastructure stocks. Investors are beginning to question the immediate return on investment for massive AI build-outs. For example, despite TSMC delivering a strong Q2 2026 earnings beat in mid-July, its elevated capital spending forecasts triggered a severe “sell the news” shockwave that dragged down the broader tech sector.

We are witnessing a distinct rotation of capital out of mega-cap tech and into financials and value equities. The stellar Q2 earnings from major Wall Street banks have offered an attractive, lower-multiple alternative for capital, accelerating the profit-taking in the Nasdaq 100.

The broader economic backdrop is cooling. S&P Global Composite PMIs for the US recently slipped back toward the 50 mark (the threshold between expansion and contraction). While tech earnings expectations remain aggressively high, this divergence between sky-high tech forecasts and a slowing underlying US economy creates massive forecast risk.

The short-term outlook for the Nasdaq 100 remains cautious to bearish. The index is actively searching for a bottom amidst multiple compression threats and AI trade exhaustion.
