Meta Platforms shares extended their decline this week, falling more than 2% as broad technology weakness, massive AI spending, and growing doubts over future monetization pressured sentiment ahead of next week’s earnings report.
Meta Stock Falls as AI Spending Concerns Return Ahead of Earnings
Meta Platforms shares are losing momentum after a powerful rally, with investors increasingly questioning whether the company’s enormous artificial intelligence investments will generate sufficient returns.
The stock climbed toward $686 last week after optimism surrounding Meta’s plans to commercialize excess AI computing capacity boosted sentiment. However, the recovery quickly lost steam as weakness returned across major technology and semiconductor stocks.
Meta shares subsequently reversed lower, falling below $630 on Wednesday, as investors locked in profits and reassessed the company’s increasingly expensive AI strategy.
The renewed selling pressure comes at an uncomfortable time for Meta, with quarterly earnings approaching next week. Investors are now likely to focus heavily on capital expenditure guidance, advertising growth, and evidence that AI investments are translating into meaningful financial returns.
Meta Rally Runs Out of Momentum
Meta shares had enjoyed a strong advance before the latest reversal.
The prospect of a new Meta Compute platform initially attracted investor interest, with the company potentially using its enormous AI infrastructure investments to generate additional revenue by selling computing capacity to external customers.
The idea offered a potential solution to one of the biggest concerns surrounding Meta’s AI strategy: how to generate returns from the billions of dollars being spent on chips, data centers, networking equipment, and energy infrastructure.
However, enthusiasm has faded.
As broader technology stocks came under pressure, investors began taking a more critical view of Meta’s valuation and the enormous costs associated with its AI ambitions.
The result has been a sharp deterioration in short-term momentum, raising concerns that the stock’s latest rally may have already peaked.
Wedbush Favors Amazon Over Meta
Sentiment was further damaged by a cautious assessment from Wedbush analyst Ygal Arounian, who argued that Amazon currently offers a more compelling hyperscaler investment opportunity.
While Meta continues to benefit from a powerful digital advertising business, concerns remain over its ability to generate meaningful returns from AI investments outside advertising.
AI has already improved advertising targeting, content recommendations, and engagement across Facebook, Instagram, and other Meta platforms.
However, newer initiatives remain less proven.
Meta AI assistants, business-focused AI tools, subscription products, and the potential expansion into cloud computing are all still developing.
This creates a growing gap between Meta’s rapidly rising capital expenditure and the visibility of new revenue streams.
Wedbush maintained a Neutral rating with a $671 price target, reflecting the view that much of the company’s future potential may already be reflected in its valuation.
Massive AI Spending Raises Fresh Profitability Questions
Meta’s spending plans remain one of the biggest sources of investor anxiety.
The company has increased its expected 2026 capital expenditure to between $125 billion and $145 billion, with funds directed toward advanced semiconductors, data centers, networking infrastructure, and computing capacity.
Management argues that these investments are essential to maintaining Meta’s position in the rapidly developing AI landscape.
However, the market is increasingly asking whether spending is growing faster than the company’s potential revenue opportunities.
Meta’s advertising business remains extremely profitable and continues to benefit from AI-driven improvements in targeting and engagement.
The problem is that investors may eventually demand more.
If AI spending primarily improves existing advertising operations without creating significant new revenue streams, shareholders could begin questioning whether the enormous capital requirements are justified.
Meta Compute Faces a Crowded Market
Meta Compute could potentially provide a new source of revenue by allowing external customers to access AI models and surplus computing resources.
In theory, this could help Meta generate better returns from its infrastructure investments while reducing its dependence on advertising.
However, the strategy would place Meta in direct competition with established cloud giants.
Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud already dominate the cloud infrastructure market, while specialist AI infrastructure companies are also expanding aggressively.
This creates a difficult competitive environment.
If Meta attempts to gain market share through lower prices, the additional revenue could come at the expense of profitability. If it maintains higher pricing, customers may simply choose established alternatives.
Advertising Risks Add to the Pressure
Meta’s core advertising business also faces potential risks.
High interest rates, uncertain economic growth, and cautious corporate spending can weigh on advertising budgets.
Because advertising still generates the vast majority of Meta’s revenue, even a moderate slowdown in marketing demand could create pressure on earnings growth.
This makes the upcoming earnings report particularly important.
Investors will be looking for evidence that advertising momentum remains strong enough to offset the company’s enormous AI spending commitments.
Meta Chart Weekly – MAs Turn from Support Into Resistance
Meta stock price fell to $520 in March as investors reassessed the company’s spending trajectory. However we saw a swift reversal higher in April and it extending the upside further to $691.50 in April, but buyers failed to push above the 50 weekly SMA (yellow) and the stock started to reverse, falling below $600 again after the earnings report showed huge spending. In July we saw a rebound, but the 50 SMA stopped the surge again and we’re seeing another reversal lower now.
Regulatory and Leadership Uncertainty Remains
Meta also continues to face regulatory challenges in major international markets.
European regulators remain focused on issues including child safety and compliance with the Digital Services Act, while UK authorities continue examining aspects of the company’s business messaging operations.
These regulatory pressures may not fundamentally undermine Meta’s long-term strategy, but they could increase compliance costs and create additional operational uncertainty.
Reports of senior leadership changes and insider share sales have also attracted attention, although some executive transactions were reportedly conducted under prearranged trading plans.
Meta Stock Outlook Turns More Uncertain Ahead of Earnings
Meta remains a dominant technology company with an exceptionally profitable advertising ecosystem and a growing presence in AI.
However, investor sentiment has become noticeably less forgiving.
The combination of a failed rally, falling technology stocks, massive capital expenditure plans, competitive pressure from Amazon and other hyperscalers, and uncertainty over AI monetization has created a more difficult backdrop for META stock.
With earnings approaching, the company faces increasing pressure to prove that its enormous AI investments are more than an expensive race for technological leadership.
If Meta fails to provide convincing evidence that AI spending can generate substantial incremental revenue and long-term profits, the recent decline could deepen. For now, the stock’s retreat below $630 signals that investors are becoming increasingly skeptical, and next week’s earnings report could determine whether the latest selloff stabilizes or develops into a much broader repricing of Meta’s AI-driven growth expectations.
