WTI Oil Surges 6% to $91.74 as Iran War Tensions Push Crude Toward $100

WTI crude oil futures surged 6% to settle at $91.74, gaining around $5 on the day as escalating Middle East tensions continued to drive aggressive buying across energy markets. The sharp rally highlights growing concerns about potential disruptions to regional energy supplies as uncertainty surrounding the Iran conflict intensifies.

Middle East Tensions Fuel Fresh Oil Rally

Reports of further explosions and rising military tensions across the region have added to concerns about a broader escalation.

Iranian media reported powerful explosions on Kuwait’s Bubiyan Island, while separate reports indicated an explosion in Kuwait. Another explosion was reportedly heard on Iran’s Qeshm Island following a missile strike near the coastal area.

Meanwhile, Israel appears to be preparing for the possibility of further escalation. Israeli reports indicated that officials believe the region could be heading toward a more dangerous phase, although Israel has reportedly maintained that it would directly enter the conflict only if attacked.

The developments have kept investors focused on the possibility of a wider regional confrontation, supporting a significant risk premium in crude oil prices.

U.S. Political Divisions Add Uncertainty

Political developments in Washington have further complicated the outlook.

The U.S. House passed an Iran War Powers resolution seeking to reinforce Congress’s authority over military action. However, the Senate rejected a similar measure, highlighting divisions over the extent of presidential authority in the ongoing conflict.

The uncertainty surrounding U.S. involvement could remain an important market driver, particularly if tensions escalate further or additional military action threatens key energy infrastructure and shipping routes.

WTI Breaks Above Key Technical Resistance

The latest rally has significantly improved WTI’s technical structure.

Crude prices moved above the 100-day moving average at approximately $89.71 for the first time since June 12. Buyers also briefly pushed WTI above the 50% Fibonacci retracement level near $93.26, with the session high reaching approximately $93.50 before prices pulled back.

The $89.71 100-day moving average now becomes an important near-term support level.

As long as WTI remains above this area, the technical bias could continue to favour buyers. However, a sustained break above $93.26 would strengthen the bullish outlook and potentially open the way toward the June high near $97.

A move above $97 could then put the psychologically important $100 level back into focus.

Oil’s Turnaround Has Been Dramatic

The speed of the recovery has been significant.

Before the latest escalation in the Iran conflict, WTI closed around $67.28. Earlier this month, crude briefly traded near $67.04 before reversing sharply higher.

The subsequent rally has pushed oil more than $24 above those lows, representing a dramatic change in market sentiment as geopolitical risk has replaced previous concerns over weak demand and oversupply.

U.S. Gasoline Prices Also Rise

Higher crude prices are beginning to affect consumers in the United States.

The average U.S. gasoline price has risen to approximately $4.09 per gallon, compared with around $3.83 at the beginning of July.

If oil prices continue climbing toward $100, gasoline prices could face additional upward pressure, potentially creating renewed concerns about inflation and consumer spending.

For now, WTI’s technical momentum remains bullish, but the outlook is highly dependent on geopolitical developments. A sustained move above $93.26 could strengthen the rally, while a return below $89.71 would weaken the immediate bullish setup and signal that traders are beginning to unwind the geopolitical risk premium.
